With heavy hearts, we share the passing of Frank Dennis Ruff, who left us peacefully on February 7, 2026, at the young age of 71.
Frank was born in Passaic, New Jersey, at St. Mary’s Hospital on October 8, 1954, to Rosina Calamusa and Frank Ruff. He was raised in Elmwood Park, later lived in Lodi, and eventually made his home in Whiting, New Jersey — a place where he found comfort in quiet moments, family, and familiar routines.
Frank worked hard throughout his life and took pride in honest work. He held various jobs, including a hardware store lumber manager, a service station technician and performing factory work maintaining boilers. He wasn’t one to seek attention — he simply showed up, did what needed to be done, and kept moving forward.
From a young age, Frank enjoyed staying active. In his school years, he played football and baseball, and as he grew older, he enjoyed spending time on the golf course, specifically at Hillman’s Golf Land in Elmwood Park. He loved fishing, days at the beach, and had a deep interest in Civil War history. Music was always close to his heart, especially doo-wop favorites like The Drifters, The Platters, and Dion & The Belmonts, along with classic rock songs by the Eagles. He enjoyed relaxing with classic sitcoms and was an avid horror movie and sci-fi movie buff.
Frank was also a devoted sports fan, enjoying professional and college football, baseball, hockey, boxing, and auto racing — especially the Indianapolis 500 and Formula 1. One of his favorite pastimes was simply sitting outside at home, feeding the squirrels, taking in the fresh air, and enjoying the peace of the moment.
Frank shared 30 loving years with his devoted longtime girlfriend, Maryann Perone and her mother Mary. She stood by his side and shared a life filled with companionship, routines, caring for one another, and memories that will be cherished forever. Mary was there for Frank and was a guiding light in his life.
Frank is survived by his sister, Claudia Ruff, and his brothers, Greg Ruff and his wife Cynthia, and Robert Ruff and his wife Tanya. He was a loving uncle to his nieces and nephews: April Spano; Shaun Matriss and his wife Lisa; Andrea Schmelzer and her husband Steve; Christopher Ruff and his wife Anne; and Leilani Ruff. He will also be fondly remembered by extended family and friends.
Frank will be remembered for his steady presence, his quiet nature, and his appreciation for life’s simple pleasures. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
Memorial gathering 12pm Tuesday, March 17, 2026 with a religious service at 1pm, at DeGraff Lakehurst Funeral Home, 119 Union Ave., Lakehurst.

Rest in peace my brother Frank. I know you are running on the beach somewhere in no pain. Love you, your bro Greg.
Frank and I had done a great deal together while I was still living in NJ before going in the military. We fished, especially the Ramapo River in NJ for trout. Lake Hopatcong was a favorite lake for largemouth bass and bluegills. We even fished for the big carp in the Passaic River below the Dundee dam down the road from the River View East restaurant. We spend a great deal of time along the Jersey shore from Keansburg to Seaside Heights to Beach Haven, Surf City, Harvey Cedars and Barnegat Light, on Long Beach Island. We bowled at the old bowling alley on Rte 4 down the highway from the old house on Parkview Ave. We played golf at the old Hillman’s Golf Land. I left to go into the Air Force and “life” becomes a reality. The time really passes quickly, too quickly. Frank will be missed. May he rest in peace .
frank rest in peace
Some of my favorite memories with my Uncle Frank are watching sports and NASCAR together, learning the games he loved, and spending time with him at the beach. He taught me more than just sports; he gave me time, patience, and moments I will always carry with me. I will forever be grateful for those memories and for him.
My sincere sympathy to Claudia & Maryann. Will miss having Frank call me at Whiting Gardens. Rest in Peace, dear Frank. Dorothy Ascione
